In a decisive move, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced on Monday the formation of an interim government following the dissolution of the parliament. This announcement comes amid escalating political turmoil and widespread protests.
During a meeting with leaders of various political parties and civil society representatives at Bangabhaban, in the presence of the chiefs of the three armed forces, President Shahabuddin emphasised the urgency of stabilising the nation. “A decision has been taken to form an interim government as soon as possible by dissolving parliament. The army will also take measures to normalise the prevailing anarchic situation,” he declared, according to a report by the Bengali-language daily Prothom Alo.
One of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the order for the release of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who has been under house arrest following multiple convictions. This decision was confirmed by the Dhaka Tribune, which also noted the president’s directive to release all students detained during the recent protests.
The session at Bangabhaban further saw the adoption of a condolence motion, expressing profound sorrow over the deaths of students and other individuals during the anti-quota movement, which has rocked the nation in recent weeks.
The political landscape of Bangladesh took a dramatic turn as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina abruptly resigned and left the country on a military aircraft. In her absence, the army has stepped in to manage the power vacuum, leading to significant unrest. As news of Hasina’s departure spread, hundreds of protesters stormed her residence, causing extensive damage and looting, reflecting the intense anti-government sentiment that has resulted in over 300 deaths in the past two weeks.
In response to the chaos, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army’s media wing, announced the imposition of a curfew from 12:00 am to 6:00 am on Tuesday. Army Chief General Wakar-Uz-Zaman is scheduled to meet with representatives of students and teachers to address their concerns, according to an ISPR statement.
Furthermore, General Zaman assured that all government and semi-government offices, private offices, factories, and educational institutions, including schools, colleges, madrasahs, and universities, will reopen on Tuesday, signaling a return to normalcy amidst the ongoing unrest.
As the nation watches closely, the formation of the interim government and the release of prominent political figures are seen as crucial steps towards restoring stability and addressing the grievances of the populace.
