New Delhi: The Indian Olympic contingent returned with a nought in medals for fourth successive day at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday (August 5) but some events managed to reignite hopes for a podium finish.
The biggest upset of the day was young shuttler Lakshya Sen missing out on a bronze medal despite a one-game cushion in hand. He lost to Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia 21-13, 16-21 and 11-21 in a contest which stretched for 71 minutes at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
In another upset of the day in Chateauroux, Maheshwari Chauhan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka lost by one point to Chinese pair in a 43-44 result in the mixed team skeet bronze medal contest, and hence settled for a fourth position.
Wrestling events started at the Paris Olympics as Nisha Dahiya was the first among six Indians in action in the women’s 68kg freestyle category. She started her tournament with a win against Ukraine’s Tetiana Sova 6-4 in the round of 16 before she went through endurance in the later part of the day.
The 25-year-old from Haryana suffered a serious injury on her right hand in the quarterfinal duel with North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum, where she eventually lost 8-10 but not before staging a spirited fight. Nisha was in a commanding lead at 8-1 just before 90 seconds to go, that’s when she felt pain in her right hand. Though she attempted to fightback but the body wasn’t there for support and she was left to feel helpless as the North Korean grappler advanced to the semifinal round.
Women’s TT team through to quarters, Avinash Sable qualifies for 3000m steeplechase
Indian women’s table tennis team, who is making their first appearance at the Olympics in the team event, moved to the quarterfinal stage after defeating Romania 3-2 in the Round of 16. Senior paddler Manika Batra starred with two wins, including a decider against Adina Diaconu by 3-0 to avert a resurgent comeback from Romania. India will face either USA or Germany in the last 8.
Avinash Sable finished fifth in the second heat of men’s 3000m steeplechase to advance to the final. He clocked a timing of 8:15.43s to become the first man from India to reach the final of the event at the Olympics. The 29-year-old will run in the final on Thursday (August 8). However, quartermiler Kiran Pahal failed to book an automatic semi-final berth in women’s 400m following a seventh place finish in her heat.
