Antim Panghal & team set to be deported after sister caught using accreditation at Paris Olympics

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Antim Panghal and her entire entourage have been asked to leave Paris for a major disciplinary breach. Antim’s sister was caught using the wrestler’s accreditation at the Paris Olympics 2024 Games Village and was briefly detained by the French police for questioning. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sprung into action after the embarrassing incident and decided to send the wrestler and her team home.

The expectations were high from Panghal, who qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 in place of veteran Vinesh Phogat. However, the promising youngster suffered a humiliating defeat in her opening bout in the women’s 53kg category on Wednesday, August 07. She lost 10-0 to Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil to crash out of the competition.

Hours after her defeat, the two-time junior world champion’s sister, Nisha Panghal was caught by the security officials at the Games Village in Paris for trying to imitate her and falsely entering the village. She was detained by the Paris police for questioning and was let go with a warning after IOA’s intervention.

“The Indian Olympic Association has decided to fly wrestler Antim and her support staff back after a disciplinary breach was brought to IOA’s notice by the French authorities,” IOA said in a statement.

Why Antim Panghal and her team are being deported from Paris?

As per a report in PTI, a source revealed what led to the detention of Antim’s sister by the security officials in Paris. As per the source, Antim asked her sister to get her belongings from the Games Village in Paris, however, instead of the Games Village she reached the hotel where the wrestler’s coach Bhagat Singh and sparring partner Vikas were staying.

Antim’s sister was eventually caught by the security officials and was detained for impersonation. She was later taken to the police station for questioning. Antim too was called by the French police for questioning in the matter.

“Instead of heading to the Games Village, she reached the hotel where her coach Bhagat Singh and sparring partner Vikas, who is actually her coach, were staying. Antim asked her sister to go to the Games Village and come back with her belongings. Her sister was caught for impersonation and was taken to a police station to record her statement,” the source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Antim suffered a crushing defeat in her opening bout against Yetgil, who took her down in the very first minute to take two points before flipping her to make it 4-0. It was a cakewalk for the Turkish from there as she scored six more points with ease to win the game 10-0. Antim’s repechage hopes also ended after the Tuskish wrestler was defeated in her next round.
