New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra will be eyeing his second consecutive gold medal when he takes the field in the final of the men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, August 08. The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist began his title defence at the Paris Games in style with a dominant show in the qualification round.
The defending champion produced a monstrous throw of 89.34m, his season-best and the second-best throw of all time to ease into the final. Neeraj comfortably cleared the automatic qualification mark of 84m in his very first attempt to finish on top of the charts during the qualification. He will now be up against some of the best in the world in the much-awaited final.
Neeraj is India’s last major gold medal hope at the Paris Olympics 2024 after wrestler Vinesh Phogat was denied an opportunity to play her gold medal match following her disqualification for being 100 grams overweight. Neeraj has the chance to become the first Indian athlete to win two individual gold medals at the Olympics.
The 26-year-old scripted history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by clinching the gold medal in men’s javelin throw to become the first Indian to bag gold in athletics. He also became only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Neeraj now stands one throw away from being in a league of his own with two gold medals to his name.
Neeraj led the list of 12 javelin throwers, who qualified for the final in the qualifying round and will once again be hoping to finish on top in the summit clash. The Indian javelin star looked on top of his game in qualification and will be hoping to continue his fine form in the final where he will be up against the likes of Anderson Peters, Jakub Vadlejch and Julain Weber among others.
