Explained: Why Pakistan is ranked above India in Paris Olympics medal tally despite one medal?

New Delhi: Pakistan’s 32-year-long wait for an Olympic medal finally came to a halt on Thursday after star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem clinched gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the Stade de France stadium. A monstrous 92.97m throw was all it took for the 27-year-old to cement his place at the top in the second attempt.

Thereafter, Nadeem was never displaced from the pole position by any of his 11 competitors, including reigning Tokyo champion Neeraj Chopra from India. The Pakistan track and field athlete won the first individual gold medal for the country, taking the overall tally to 11 medals, first after the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Arshad Nadeem’s gold medal not just opened the medal account for the seven-member Pakistan Olympic contingent but also helped them overtake neighbouring country India in the medal tally positions. Pakistan is jointly placed at the 54th spot with Algeria, Bahrain, Botswana, and Dominica. Meanwhile, with five medals (four bronzes and a silver), India is placed at 64th position.

How does the medal tally count work in Olympics?

The medal tally position in Olympics or any multi-sporting event is determined by the most number of gold medals a country or contingent wins. The overall medal tally doesn’t come into consideration to determined the positions on the table. However, if two countries have bagged the same number of gold medals then the silver medal counts is taken into consideration. Even if silver medals are same then the bronze medals become decider for positions.

In case two or more countries have the same number of gold, silver and bronze medals then both jointly sit in the same position, just like Pakistan is currently occupying the 54th spot with four other countries.

Taking the battle of top spot for instance, China has accumulated 76 medals whereas USA has 103 medals. But China occupies the first position (at the time of writing this piece on Friday evening) as they have 31 gold medal, one more than USA’s 30.
