New Delhi: India smashed the record for their best-ever medal haul at the Paralympics as the Indian para-athletes continued their stellar run at the Paris Games on Tuesday, September 03. India’s track and field athletes delivered an exceptional performance on Day 6 of the competition on Tuesday to extend the country’s medals tally to 20.
With 20 medals, India shattered the record for the most medals won in a single edition of the Paralympics which was set in the Tokyo Games three years back. India won a total of 19 medals, including 5 gold in Tokyo 2020. The Indian contingent bettered their best-ever tally inside just six days at the Paris courtesy of a stunning medal rush over the last couple of days.
13 medals in 2 days for India at Paralympics 2024
India won as many as 13 medals in just two days on Monday and Tuesday to breach the 19-medal mark and record their best-ever medal haul in Paris. It started on September 02 as India witnessed a magical Monday, winning 8 medals, including 2 gold. Sumit Antil and Nitesh Kumar headlined India’s fabulous display with a gold medal each.
Antil produced a record throw of 70.59m to defend his gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 category while Nitesh won his maiden Paralympic gold after beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in the final of the men’s singles badminton SL3 category. India won 3 silver medals on Monday courtesy of Yogesh Kathuniya, Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj.
Kathuniya finished 2nd on the podium in the men’s discus throw F56 final while para-shuttlers Murugesan and Yathiraj lost their respective finals. Para-shuttlers Nithya Sri Shivan, Manisha Ramadass won a bronze medal in their respective categories while the pair of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar bagged bronze in mixed team compound open archery to add three bronze medals to India’s tally on Monday.
The medal rush continued for the Indian contingent on Tuesday with two silver and three bronze medals. Ajeet Singh and Sundar Gurjar won a silver and a bronze medal respectively in the men’s javelin throw F46 event while Sharad Kumar and Mariappan Thangavelu won silver and bronze respectively in the men’s high jump T63 final. Deepthi Jeevanji won a bronze medal in the women’s 400m T20 race to make it 5 medals for India on Tuesday.
With 13 medals across two days, India scripted history in Paris as they recorded their best-ever medals tally. With plenty of events still to come at the Paris Paralympics 2024, India have a strong chance of breaching the 25-medal mark this time around and finishing with a much better ranking compared to their 24th-place finish on the medals table at the Tokyo Paralympics three years back.

India are currently in the 19th spot on the Paris Paralympics 2024 points table with a total of 20 medals, including 3 gold. Compared to the Tokyo Games, India have won two gold medals less in Paris but with a number of sporting events yet to conclude, there is a chance that the Indian contingent might equal or better their gold medals tally from the last edition as well.
