Which nations exceeded expectations at Paris Olympics 2024?

New Delhi: The Paris Olympics 2024 reached its conclusion on Sunday with a grand closing ceremony finally pulling down the curtains on the marquee event. The Games were historic both on and off the field, bringing record-breaking numbers and also leaving behind a plethora of interesting stats that are simply amazing. One such stat is the number of medal-winning nations with little population, and how it can be divided per medal.

When checking up on the list of such nations, Grenada (80th position overall) turned out to be the most successful in winning Olympic medals based on the size of their nation. They had two bronze medals to their credit, won by Anderson Peters and Lindon Victor in men’s javelin and decathlon events respectively. This meant that they averaged one medal per 56,289 inhabitants out of the population of 1,12,578.

Next on the list is Dominica (62nd position overall) which won a sole and historic first gold medal (Thea LaFond in women’s triple jump) meaning there was a medal on 73,368 residents. Next in line is Saint Lucia (55th position overall) which won a gold and a silver medal in athletics, meaning they average one medal per 92,050 inhabitants.

The fourth place is acquired by New Zealand (11th position overall) which won 10 gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals – taking the tally to a total of 20 medals. This means that there’s a medal per 2,66,945 inhabitants. Following the top four is Bahrain (33rd position overall) having two gold, a silver, and a bronze medal, making it one medal per 4,25,393 residents.

Jamaica (44th position overall), which won six medals in total – a gold, three silvers, and two bronzes, acquired sixth place in the list. This makes it one medal per 4,70,924 of the population.

Other nations on the list

Meanwhile, Ireland remained 18th, Great Britain were 24th, and China in 74th. The USA, which topped the medal chart, were 47th in the list making it one medal per 112,000 inhabitants out of the 126 medals won. For India, the stat is doomed as the nation finished 71st on the medals table with just six medals – a silver and five bronze, meaning an average of one medal per 234,151,666 residents.

India had sent a contingent of 117 athletes to Paris, yet they could only manage five bronze medals and a sole silver to show for their efforts. The country is also one of the 28 teams that failed to win a gold medal in any sport.
