Jay Shah: BCCI secretary rejects ICC’s request to host Women’s T20 World Cup amidst Bangladesh civil unrest

New Delhi: The civil unrest in Bangladesh has put their status as the hosts of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 slated to begin on October 3. The tournament, which is scheduled to be hosted by Sylhet and Mirpur, is likely to be shifted from the country due to the ongoing political turmoil. Bangladesh has been reeling since the start of the month from a student-led uprising that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country

Looking at the current situation in the country, question marks have been raised over the event’s viability in Bangladesh.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has addressed the speculation by confirming that India will not replace Bangladesh as the host if a venue change becomes necessary. Shah revealed that the BCCI had been approached by the ICC to potentially host the Women’s T20 WC.

No T20 World Cup in India

Shah categorically denied the offer, citing the ongoing monsoon season in India and the country’s packed schedule which includes, hosting the ODI Women’s World Cup next year.

“They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no,” Shah said during an interaction with the Times Group journalists at the TOI’s Mumbai office on Wednesday.

“We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” he added.

Shah also stated that the upcoming home series against Bangladesh is important for the BCCI. He said that while no communication has been made with the Bangladesh authorities, if the situation demands he will reach out to them.

“The Bangladesh series is very important to us,” Shah said.

India will play two Tests and three T20Is in the upcoming home series against Bangladesh starting September 19.
