New Delhi: Aman Sehrawat bettered India’s performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 after winning a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling event at the Champ-de-Mars Arena in the French capital on Friday. His win delivered India their first wrestling medal at the ongoing Games, in the midst of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification saga, and also notably took him past ace shuttler PV Sindhu for an elite record in the history of the Indian Olympics.
Aman Sehrawat has now become the youngest-ever individual Olympic medallist from India aged 21 years, 0 months, and 24 days. He overtook the previous record held by PV Sindhu, who was 21 years, 1 month, and 14 days old when she won silver at the Rio Olympics 2016. This means that the grappler from Haryana has a long way to go and will be bringing more laurels to the nation in the upcoming marquee events as well.
Sehrawat’s bronze medal effort came out as a silver lining for Indians across the globe who were left saddened with the disqualification of Vinesh from her final bout which could have brought a gold. Nonetheless, Sehrawat has added an Olympic medal to his tally and will be riding high on confidence for the upcoming events.
Sehrawat’s Paris campaign
Sehrawat has made a name for himself at the biggest sporting spectacle of the globe, making India six-medal strong. It was the fifth bronze medal for India with Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal. Featuring in his first Olympics, the young wrestler started his campaign on a promising note on Thursday as he beat Vladimir Egorov of North Macedonia 10-0 in the pre-quarterfinal.
He further defeated Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania 12-0 in the quarterfinal, advancing to the semifinal. He had his eyes set on the gold medal match but couldn’t proceed further from his semifinal bout where he was defeated 10-0 by Japan’s Rei Higuchi. He although qualified for the bronze medal play-off where he downed Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico 13-5, taking India’s tally to six medals.
