DFB-Pokal 2024/25: Bayern cruise past Ulm; Hoffenheim advance on penalties in the first round.

New Delhi: The 82nd season of the yearly German football cup competition is the 2024–25 DFB-Pokal. Sixty-four clubs, including every squad from the 2. Bundesliga and Bundesliga the year before, are competing in the league. The first of the competition’s six rounds will take place on August 16, 2024, while the final will take place on May 24, 2025, in Berlin’s Olympiastadion, a supposedly neutral location that has hosted the final since 1985. After the Bundesliga championship, the DFB-Pokal is regarded as the second-most significant club title in German football. The German Football Association is in charge of the DFB-Pokal (DFB).

The 2025–2026 UEFA Europa League group stage is automatically qualified for the winner of the DFB-Pokal. The team in sixth place will get a berth in the league’s UEFA Conference League play-off round, while the team in seventh place will get a slot if they have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League through their standing in the Bundesliga. In addition, at the beginning of the next season, the victors will host the DFL-Supercup 2025 and play the 2024–25 Bundesliga champions.

Last season, it was the great Xabi Alonso and his invincible Bayer Leverkusen who lifted the cup in a historic run, where they dominated the league as well as the domestic cup.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden vs Mainz

The DFB Pokal kicked off tonight as SV Wehen Wiesbaden and Mainz clashed at BRIT Arena, where the Karnevalsverein, won the match 3-1 to progress through to the next round of this seasons DFB Pokal. Despite getting an early lead, Wiesbaden just couldn’t hold on to it as a goal from Dominik Kohr in the 59th minute took the match to extra time where Jonathan Burkardt and Nadiem Amiri scored late to make it 3-1 for Mainz.

However, Mainz move forward and they will be looking to go all the way after a very positive start to the campaign. On the other hand, it was a heartbreaking night for the Wiesbaden fans as they won’t be progressing forward.

Halle FC vs St. Pauli

St. Pauli managed to win in a thrilling contest where they faced Hallescher FC. It truly was a game where both the sides gave it all on the pitch but in the end it was St. Pauli who had the last laugh as they managed to edge past Halle with a thrilling 3-2 win. The match was heading towards penalty until the German midfielder, Lars Ritzka scored in the dying moments to get the job done for his side, winning the game 3-2.

It was a certainly a game that was thrown away by Hallescher as they were leading majority of the game and in the end, St. Pauli managed to make a great comeback. The game was played at a very high pace and both the sides looked good on the pitch biut in the end it was the Kiezkicker.

Würzburger Kickers vs Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim make it through to the next round after stretching the match all the way to penalties as they beat Wurzburger Kickers. The match remained 2-2 after full time as the game further went up till penalties. It was a fanatic start to the game with both the sides looking threatening and it didn’t take Kickers to takw the lead in the 11th minute of the game. It was Enec Kuc, who gave them the lead but it was cancelled out by an own goal from Farahnak as the score remained 1-1 at full time.

However, extra time didn’t disappoint either as two more goals were scored to take the game to penalties on 2-2 scoreline. However, Hoffenheim took full advantage of Wurzburger’s lack of experience from the penalty spot to win the match and progress through to the next round of DFB Pokal.

Ulm vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich were up against second division side Ulm and they showed no mercy as they managed to thrash thir opponents 4-0. It was an easy win for Vincent Kompany’s side as Thomas Muller’s brace and goals from Kingsley Coman and Harry Kane proved enough for the German Giants to cruise past Ulm. They progressed through to the next round of DFB Pokal and they are without a doubt the favourites to win the cup. Another player that had a great debut for Bayern was Michael Olise who managed to assist Kingsley Coman’s strike for the third goal for Bayern Munich.

With a 4-0 victory away at Ulm in the DFB Pokal, Kompany’s first competitive encounter as manager of Bayern Munich got off to the ideal start. After just 14 minutes, Muller scored a brace to give Bayern a flying start. Substitutions made in the second half restored their attacking threat; Olise assisted Coman for the third goal, and Muller then fed Kane to complete an impressive performance. Ulm has now lost their previous three DFB Pokal games, which is their longest losing streak since at least 2006. At the end of play, Bayern had 77.2% of the possession and 3.28 total anticipated goals, demonstrating their dominance.
