New Delhi: British pop star Ed Sheeran made it to the Portman Road to support his hometown club Ipswich Town who were playing their Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Saturday. Ipswich went down 0-2 against Liverpool as Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah shone for The Reds in what turned out to be a one-sided clash. The Premier League 2024-25 kicked off on August 17 and is done with its first two games.
Sheeran grabbed the spotlight during the complete match as he was seen in the stands with a pack of Ipswich supporters, all donning blue jerseys and cheering for the team in their very first game of the season. Although the team put on a worthy effort, it all went in vain as the Arne Slot-coached side fared much better and clinched their first victory of the season.
A video of Sheeran during the match is making rounds on the internet where he can be seen starting the goal celebrations but going quiet seconds afterward. It was a header effort from centre-back Jacob Greaves which almost made it to the net during the 21st minute but Liverpool goalie Alisson Becker made a clear save. Sheeran however, rose from his seat to start the celebrations but went quiet after he realised it had been saved.

Why was Ed Sheeran present?
The four-time Grammy winner is an ardent supporter of Ipswich Town as the club belongs to his hometown. He was born in West Yorkshire but was raised in Suffolk and has been a supporter of the Tractor Boys ever since. He has also been a sponsor for both men’s and women’s teams’ shirts since 2021.
His presence during the game on Saturday made headlines as Sheeran recently acquired a 1.4% stake in the club through Gamechanger 20 Ltd. This means that he won’t be a voting shareholder or a member of the board but the deal gives the 33-year-old singer long-term access to the executive box at the Portman Road.
