New Delhi: Arsenal host defending champions Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon in a thrilling third-round matchup between the two most successful teams in FA Cup history. The Red Devils are trying to hold onto the title they won thanks to their unexpected victory against Manchester City a few months ago, while the Gunners, who have an unprecedented 14 victories in the competition, have fallen short since winning the cup last in 2020.
With two third-round and two fourth-round exits in the last four seasons, as well as a loss to Liverpool at this precise hurdle in 2023–24, the Gunners have seen their FA Cup powers decline since hoisting the trophy high at Wembley in the 2019/20 season. Continuing with the theme of knockout disappointments, Mikel Arteta’s team lost 2-0 to Newcastle United in the first leg of their semi-final on Tuesday night but they start their quest for FA Cup crown number 15 now.
In fact, since the Portuguese took over the Red Devils a few weeks ago, Arteta has already defeated incoming visitor Ruben Amorim, and Arsenal has defeated the FA Cup-holding team in each of their last six tournament matches against the reigning champions. Manchester United are not in a good shape since losing to Arsenal a few months back. As a result, there has been unironic chatter that the 20-time English champions are engaged in a relegation war with half of the season left.
Even though Man United’s performance on Merseyside was impressive, the draw extended their winless streak to five games across all competitions. During that span, they have given up at least two goals in each of their previous nine games, and Amorim’s team has failed to keep a clean sheet in each of those games. It will be interesting to see how this one goes at the Emirates!
