Durand Cup: Quarter-final fixtures pit Mohun Bagan, East Bengal in potential final showdown

New Delhi: After abandoning Saturday’s Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal clash over security concerns, Durand Cup organisers announced its fixtures for quarter-finals on Sunday.

The crunch Kolkata Derby was cancelled anticipating widespread protests over a trainee doctor’s alleged rape and murder at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata.

Defending champions Bagan and EB were awarded a point each, which helped them qualify for the last eight stage. Bagan qualified as Group A toppers and were set to face Punjab FC in the third quarter-final, to be held in Jamshedpur.

East Bengal advanced as one of the two best second-placed teams and were pitted against Shillong Lajong in the second quarter-final, which was shifted to Shillong instead of Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium due to the prevailing unrest in the city.

The fourth last eight stage clash will be held at the Salt Lake Stadium, where Neither Bgaan nor EB would be involved.

“After the FC Goa versus Shillong Lajong FC Group F game in Shillong concluded on Saturday evening and it became clear who the eight qualified teams were, a video call was arranged where representatives of all qualified teams came on board.

“A live draw of lots was then conducted in front of them and two teams to play in each venue was finalised,” a statement from the 133rd Durand Cup organising committee said.

The tournament organisers have not confirm the venue for the semifinals and final, which were earlier decided to be at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Bagan and EB are placed in opposite ends of the draw and could meet in the final on August 31.
