Janmashtami special recipe: Dhaniya Panjiri prasad recipe to honour Lord Krishna

New Delhi: The festival of Janmashtami also known as Lord Krishna’s birthday is a celebratory occasion marked with devotion, joy, happiness and lots of love in the form of food prepared on this day. People indulge in many kinds of food items to be prepared and offered as prasad to Lord Krishna. One of the traditional offerings made on this auspicious day is Dhaniya Panjiri. This sacred dish, associated with devotion, is simple yet rich in flavour and nutrition. Made primarily from coriander (dhaniya) powder, Dhaniya Panjiri is offered to Lord Krishna as bhog and enjoyed by devotees after the rituals.

Dhaniya Panjiri holds a significant place in Janmashtami celebrations as it is believed to be Lord Krishna’s favourite offering. The dish is also considered cooling and easy to digest, making it suitable for fasting rituals observed on Janmashtami.

Ingredients for Dhaniya Panjiri

Coriander (Dhaniya) Powder: 1 cup
Ghee: 2 tablespoons
Powdered Sugar (or Boora): ½ cup
Dry Fruits (Almonds, Cashews, Raisins): ¼ cup (chopped)
Grated Coconut: 2 tablespoons (optional)
Cardamom Powder: ½ teaspoon
Makhana (Foxnuts): 1 cup

How to prepare Panjiri at home

In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of ghee on medium heat. Add 1 cup of makhana to the pan and roast them until they become crunchy and golden brown.
In the same pan, add the remaining ghee. Toss in the chopped dry fruits such as almonds, cashews, and raisins. Roast them for 2-3 minutes until they turn slightly golden and aromatic.
Add the coriander (dhaniya) powder to the same pan. Roast it on low heat, stirring constantly to ensure it doesn’t burn.
Once the coriander powder is roasted, remove the pan from the heat. Allow it to cool for a minute. Then add the roasted dry fruits, crushed makhana, and cardamom powder to the roasted coriander powder.
Now, add powdered sugar or boora to the mixture. Ensure the sugar blends well with the other ingredients.
You can also add coconut powder if you want to enhance the flavours.
