New Delhi: Many people in the world prefer to follow a meat-based, non-vegetarian diet for a healthy lifestyle. However, over the past few years, more and more people are opting for a vegetarian diet out of empathy for animals and also for the environment. Also in some cases, people follow a vegetarian diet due to religion and culture. Hence, in this article, we will take a look at the countries which have the least non-vegetarian population.

India

India has one of the lowest non-vegetarian populations in the world and according to the World Atlas, only 3 kg of meat per capita per year is consumed. Several factors contribute to this which religion being one of the most important.

Mexico

According to reports, around 19 per cent of the people in Mexico identify themselves as vegetarians. People there are switching to a plant-based diet due to health concerns, animal rights and environmental issues. There are more vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the major cities.

Israel

Israel has a low non-vegetarian population due to Judaism which restricts the consumption of meat. The country is rapidly becoming a paradise for vegetarians with hundreds of restaurants offering vegan meals. In 2014, the world’s biggest vegan festival was hosted in Tel Aviv.

Ethiopia

The African country has a very low rate of meat consumption. Due to a high poverty rate, most of the people do not have access to meat. On average, people in the country consume 2.58 kg of beef and veal per capita, and just over 0.45 kg of poultry.

Taiwan

Taiwan has a substantial vegetarian population due to Buddhism as it advocated for a meat-free diet. Also, there are numerous mouth-watering vegetarian cuisines in the country and the government provides vegetarian options in schools and public institutions.

Germany

In Germany, more and more people are choosing a vegetarian diet over a non-vegetarian lifestyle. It has a strong animal rights movement which has led to the decline in the non-vegetarian population. Major cities like Berlin are having more vegetarian restaurants which offer traditional dishes like sauerkraut and pretzels.

Mozambique

The country in East Africa is one of the poorest in the world. As a result, the average meat consumption is low there. People in Mozambique mostly consume imported meat.
