World Water Monitoring Day: Why is the day important? 5 ways to save water

New Delhi: Water is one of those essential things which are needed to sustain life on this planet. Without water, we would be well and truly lost and there would be no life on Earth. Water is important for us to survive, and every year on September 18, World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated all over the world. In this article, we will learn more about this day.

What is World Water Monitoring Day?

In 2003, America’s Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) established World Water Monitoring Day as a global educational outreach program. It was later renamed ‘EarthEcho Water Challenge’ and ‘World Water Monitoring Challenge’ and its goal is to increase awareness about the need to protect water resources around the world and to get more people involved in it by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

According to the official website of the United States Government, World Water Monitoring Day is an international outreach program that is held annually between September 18 and October 18. It states that the program encourages people to monitor the condition of local streams, estuaries, rivers and other water bodies. Since its inception, over 80,000 people have participated in 50 countries.

Five ways to save water

1. Less shower time

Well, let us be honest: It feels great to stand under the shower. But it is also a huge waste of water. However, according to reports, the duration of the average shower is about 10 minutes and the average showerhead uses around 12 litres of water per minute. Hence, we must reduce our shower time and even if we do it by a minute, it will lead to a 10 per cent saving in water usage.

2. Check for leaks

A leaking tap leads to obvious water wastage, but sometimes leaks are not obvious. There can be underground water leakage which can be detected by keeping a tab on the daily water usage. If there’s a spike in water consumption, it could be a clear indication of a leak. Also, you can detect a leak if there is a drop in water pressure which can be noticed while taking a shower or filling the bathtub.

3. Turn off the tap

More often than not, we tend to keep the tap open while brushing our teeth, shaving or doing some other activity. The water runs unused, and it is a huge waste. Hence, we can start by turning off the tap when we are not using the water.

4. Store water

Instead of turning on the tap for water, we can store water for use beforehand. We can use the stored water till it is finished and then refill the container, and this will enable us to save water.

5. Harvest rainwater

A good way of saving water is harvesting the rainwater. We can use it to water plants in the garden, wash cars and for other purposes, enabling us to save the normal water. Nowadays, harvesting the rainwater has become very popular.

Water is important for us to survive, and every year on September 18, World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated all over the world. The day encourages people to monitor the condition of local streams, estuaries, rivers and other water bodies.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
