Sven-Göran Eriksson, former England Manager, passes away at 76

New Delhi: Sven-Goran Erikson, England’s first overseas manager ever and one of the all-time greats, passed away at the age of 76. Eriksson had revealed at the start of the year that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and had less than a year to live. He had previously stepped down as the sporting director at Karlstad after facing health issues that needed “investigation.”

Bo Gustavsson, the former Lazio coach’s agent, confirmed the news through his UK PR agent, Dean Eldredge of Oporto Sports. The report said that Eriksson was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

Eriksson’s managerial career spans four decades. He has coached Italian side Lazio and Premier League teams Manchester City and Leicester City. He started his managerial career with Swedish club Degerfors IF before moving to IFK Goteborg. Though Eriksson was only 30, his coaching style proved effective for Goteborg and led them to the Swedish title and the UEFA Cup in 1982.

Eriksson was then appointed as a manager of Portugues club Benfica, where he went on to win two league trophies and led the side to the UEFA Cup final in 1983, where an aggregate result of 2-1 saw them lose to Anderlecht. After stints with Roma and Fiorentina, he returned to Benfica in 1989 and led the side to another league title and, in 1990, a place in the European Cup final, losing eventually to Milan.
