1. Ted Bundy

Theodore Robert Bundy, popularly known as Ted Bundy, was a serial killer and sex offender in the US. In the 1970s, he kidnapped, raped, and murdered dozens of young women and girls. Before his execution in 1989, Bundy confessed to 30 murders but the total number is likely to be higher. Bundy and his cases were sensationalised by the US and he enjoyed the attention, giving interviews and boasting of his fanbase. The demography of his victims ranged from Washington and Oregon to Utah and Colorado. During the trial, he acted as his own lawyer.

2. Jack the Ripper

Nobody knows to date who Jack the Ripper was. The person killed women working as prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of London, in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district. The murderer mutilated the victims before cutting their throats and then removed their internal organs. There were speculations that the killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge due to the precise way in which all those were done. The killer was boastful and even mocked the community and the police by sending letters outlining the acts.

3. Pedro Lopez

The criminal journey of Pedro Lopez and his eventual release from imprisonment is bound to shock you. Also called The Monster of the Andes, he is a Colombian serial killer, child rapist, and fugitive who murdered at least 110 people. Most of his victims were young women and girls and he perpetrated his murders between 1969 and 1980. As per reports, Lopez himself claimed to have killed more than 300 people in his native Colombia and also in Ecuador and Peru. Lopez was arrested and imprisoned. But much to the bafflement of many, he was released in 1998 for ‘good behaviour’ and his whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

4. Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer committed his first crime in 1978 when he was just 18 years old but his crimes were found out only in 1991. Also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, he was an American serial killer and sex offender. Between 1987 and 1991, Dahmer killed and dismembered 17 males and was involved in cannibalism, necrophilia and preservation of body parts. After his arrest and trial, Dahmer was sent to jail for life. On November 28, 1994, a fellow inmate named Christopher Scarver beat him to death.

5. Harold Shipman

Harold Shipman was an English doctor in general practice who reportedly killed 250 patients. He is one of the most prolific serial killers and was also known as ‘Dr Death’. He practised in Greater Manchester and wasn’t caught until several people raised a red flag, including an undertaker who was surprised by Shipman’s large number of cremation certificates. The investigation was reportedly mishandled by the police and Shipman continued his killing spree. His downfall came when he tried to forge a will for a victim naming him beneficiary. He was finally convicted in 2000 and committed suicide while in prison in 2004. On January 31, 2000, Shipman was convicted of murdering 15 patients and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He hanged himself in his cell on January 13, 2004.
