New Delhi: It was a historic Monday for India at the Paris Paralympics 2024 as the Indian para-athletes bagged an impressive 8 medals in a single day at the Games. India won two gold medals, three silver medals and as many bronze medals in what was an unforgettable day in Paris. Sumit Antil and Nitesh Kumar headlined India’s exceptional show on Day 5 of the Paris Paralympics with two gold medals.
Discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya kicked off India’s medal rush on Day 5 with a silver medal in the men’s F56 event before Nitesh bagged the elusive gold medal in men’s singles badminton in the SL3 category. India went on to win three more medals in badminton next as Manisha Ramadass, Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj all managed to grab a spot on the podium.
Sumit then earned India’s second gold medal of the day after successfully defending his Paralympic title in the men’s javelin throw F64 category. The pair of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar clinched a bronze medal in the mixed team compound archery to secure India’s 7th medal of the day before para-shuttler Nithya Sri Sivan won bronze in the women’s singles SH6 category. India more than doubled their medals tally from the first 4 days in just one day with a total of 8 medals on Monday.

Sumit Antil – Gold in men’s javelin throw F64 category
Sumit Antil lived up to the expectations as he bagged his second successive gold medal at the Paralympics with a record throw. Antil finished on the top of the podium in the men’s javelin throw F64 category with his best effort of 70.59m while shattering his own Paralympic record twice.
Nitesh Kumar – Gold in men’s singles badminton SL3 category
Nitesh Kumar clinched a thriller against favourite Daniel Bethell of Great Britain to win the elusive gold medal in the men’s singles badminton SL3 event. Nitesh defeated Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 to clinch India’s first gold medal on Monday.
Yogesh Kathuniya – Silver in men’s discus throw F56 category
Yogesh Kathuniya headed into the men’s discus throw F56 final aiming to win the elusive gold medal. However, he had to settle for silver after finishing behind Brazil’s 45-year-old Claudiney Batista Dos Santos, who won the gold medal after breaking the Paralympic record. Kathuniya won silver with his best effort of 42.22m.
Thulasimathi Murugesan – Silver in women’s singles SU5 category
Thulasimathi Murugesan clinched silver medal in the women’s singles SU5 badminton event after going down against China’s Yang Quixia in the final. Thulasimathi lost 21-17, 21-10 in the final against the defending champion to settle for the 2nd spot on the podium.
Manisha Ramadass – Bronze in women’s singles SU5 category
19-year-old Manisha Ramadass won her bronze medal match against Denmark’s Cathrine Rosengren in the women’s singles SU5 category. Ramadass beat Rosengreen 21-12, 21-8 in straight games inside just 25 minutes to grab a spot on the podium.
Suhas Yathiraj – Silver in men’s singles SL4 category
Suhas Yathiraj won his second straight silver medal at the Paralympics. Suhas, who is also an IAS officer, was up against France’s Lucas Mazur in the gold medal match in the men’s singles SL4 category. He lost 21-17, 21-10 inside 34 minutes in the final to miss out on the top spot on the podium.
Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar – Bronze medal in mixed team compound open archery
The Indian pair of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar defeated Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina 156-155 in the bronze medal match in the mixed team compound open archery event. At 17, Sheetal became the youngest medal winner for India in the history of the Paralympics.
Nithya Sri Shivan – Bronze medal in women’s singles SH6 category
Nithya Sri Shivan bagged India’s last medal on Day 5 of the Paralympics 2024, a bronze in the women’s singles SH6 category. Nithya defeated Indonesia’s Rina Marlina 21-14, 21-6 in straight games to bag her maiden medal at the Paralympics.
