PM Narendra Modi lauds Praveen Kumar for clinching gold at Paris Paralympics

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Friday lauded athlete Praveen Kumar after he made the country proud with a gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. PM Modi lauded the athlete for scaling new heights and said that his determination has brought glory to India.

He took to social media site X to congratulate the high jumper, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, for the remarkable performance that swelled India’s medal tally at the showpiece event to 26. India have surpassed the previous tally of 19 achieved at the Tokyo Games three years back and also the number of gold medals earned in the previous edition.

India’s gold medal tally at 6

At the Tokyo Paralympics, India had earned 5 gold medals and with Praveen’s medal, the tally rose to 6. The 21-year-old athlete from Noida, who was born with a short leg, produced a season best jump of 2.08m in the six-jumper field to finish on top of the podium. Meanwhile, USA’s Derek Loccident won the silver with a best jump of 2.06m while Uzbekistan’s Temurbek Giyazov, who notched a personal best 2.03m, finished third with a bronze.
