New Delhi: Shoaib Bashir sizzled with the ball picking up as many as 6 wickets as England thrashed Zimbabwe by an innings and 45 runs on the third and final day of the four-day Test match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Saturday. By virtue of the thrilling win, England started their summer on a high.

The talented off-spinner claimed brilliant figures of 6 for 81 at Trent Bridge, his best figures in Test format, to dismiss the lacklustre tourists for 255 in their second innings. Bashir took a total of 9 wickets in the Test match after he had claimed three wickets in the first innings in which Zimbabwe were dismissed for just 265 runs and asked to bat against by the hosts.

Curran, Madhevere showcase courage

Apart from Bashir, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and skipper Ben Stokes also claimed a wicket apiece in the second innings to rattle the Zimbabwe batters. Atkinson  and Stokes had shined for the English side in the first innings as well with couple of wickets each. Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza showed some courage while batting with knocks of 88 and 60 while Ben Curran and Wessly Madhevere also contributed 37 and 31 runs respectively but it wasn’t enough to bail out the Zimbabwe side from the tough position they were stuck in.

Meanwhile, the win was on the cards for the English side after they slammed a massive score of 565/6d in their first innings, with majority of work done on the first day and some of it on the second. Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were the three centurions for the hosts as they devasted the Zimbabwe bowling attack. Harry Brook also smashed a half-century. Shoaib Bashir was named the Player of the Match for his exceptional performance with the ball.
