New Delhi: Shooter Gagan Narang lauded the performance of Indian athletes at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024. Gagan who won a bronze medal at the London Games was also India’s Chef de Mission at the Paris Olympics.
The Indian contingent has already won a record 26 medals in this edition of the Paralympics with 6 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze and is currently placed at the 14th position in the medal tally.
Avani Lekhara won India’s first gold medal in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1. Nitesh Kumar secured the second gold medal in para-badminton men’s singles SL3. He defeated Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in a thrilling final.
Sumit Antil won India’s third gold medal with a Paralympic record throw of 70.59m in the men’s javelin throw F64. Harvinder Singh made history by winning India’s first-ever gold in para archery. He defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the men’s individual recurve open final, earning India its fourth gold medal in Paris. Dharambir secured the fifth gold medal for the country in the men’s club throw F51 final and Praveen Kumar also won the gold medal in the men’s high jump T64.
‘Looking forward for more medals’: Gagan Narang
Gagan Narang praised the Indian athletes and said that the contingent is performing well and they have already surpassed the Tokyo Paralympics medal tally. He also talked about the disappointing campaign of Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics and said that he hasn’t done the analysis of Paris Olympics yet.
“I haven’t done my analysis of the Paris Olympics yet, everybody has spoken about it. But the most important thing right now is that in the Paralympics we are performing well, we are on the 16th position today” Narang told to PTI.
“A fantastic effort by our Paralympians. They surpassed the Tokyo Paralympics medal tally, looking forward for more medals” he added.
