New Delhi: Yash Dayal’s father hailed his son’s redemption journey after he received his maiden Test call-up for Team India for their upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh. Dayal was included in the 16-man squad for the 1st Test against Bangladesh which was announced by BCCI last week. The left-arm pacer is now one step away from making his dream debut for India in Test cricket.
Lauding his son for his strong comeback, Dayal’s father Chanderpal Dayal revealed how his family was subjected to taunts after the pacer was smashed for five sixes off five consecutive deliveries by Rinku Singh. Dayal was on the receiving end of a stunning onslaught from Rinku while playing for his former team Gujarat Titans in their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Chanderpal revealed school-going children would shout ‘Rinku, Rinku’ when their bus would pass through their house in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Dayal himself had gone into a shell after the onslaught and was rested from the team for the remainder of the season. However, the pacer made a strong comeback in IPL 2024 after joining his current team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
“It was like an accident for us. The school bus would pass by, and kids would scream, ‘Rinku Singh, Rinku Singh, five sixes.’ It was so painful — why did this have to happen to my son?” Yash Dayal’s father told PTI in an interview.
“We won’t stop until you play for India. You will play for India). We explained to him that very night that it wasn’t the first time something like this had happened, and it wouldn’t be the last. Yuvraj Singh hit Stuart Broad for six sixes, and Broad went on to become one of the greatest seam bowlers of all time,” he added.

Reacting to his son’s maiden Test call-up for Team India, Chanderpal said it was a big day for his family as it is the ultimate dream for any cricketer to play Test cricket for his country. Dayal earned a deserved call-up after performing well for Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit and doing well for RCB in the IPL. The pacer also picked up 4 wickets for India B in their clash against India A.
“It can’t get bigger than this for a father. For any cricketer, representing the country in Tests is the ultimate dream. It’s a huge day for us, for our family, and for our friends. The entire credit goes to him. No matter how hard I would have tried, it was his efforts that got him where he has reached today,” said Chanderpal.
Dayal will partner the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj in India’s pacer quartet for the 1st Test against Bangladesh. It remains to be seen if the left-arm pacer will be able to make his debut against Bangladesh in the series opener in Chennai on September 19.
