Gambhir terms Virat Kohli as India’s best Test captain, lauds his winning attitude

New Delhi: A candid chat between Team India superstar Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir is going viral on social media. The interview was released by the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) on its official website and has garnered millions. The duo has left the fractious past behind them for the team’s cause since Gambhir’s appointment. Virat and Gambhir have been involved in some ugly altercations in the Indian Premier League but both are now enjoying each other’s company.

In an unfiltered interaction, Gambhir and Kohli touched upon various topics on the eve of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai. Both Indian icons gave valuable insights into their mindsets and relived some memories in the process. Gambhir also pulled Kohli’s leg in one instance reminding him of his fiery attitude and how the altercation with the opposition team or players affected his mindset while batting.

The India head coach also hailed Kohli’s attitude and praised him for creating a winning culture in the team during his captaincy, especially on overseas tours. He also credited Kohli for building a solid fast bowling unit.

“I can understand what you must have gone through, a 25-year-old boy. Taking up India’s Test captaincy. What you did brilliantly was that you had built a really-really strong bowling unit. And Test matches are won by taking 20 wickets. Till the time you don’t have a strong bowling lineup you will. And that’s what made you the most successful captain in the country”, said Gambhir.

Kohli’s incredible record as India’s Test captain

Kohli, as India’s Test captain, instilled a fearless culture in the team and emphasised on building a fast-bowling unit that came in handy during India’s historic win in the Australia 2018-19 tour.

Kohli ended his seven-year tenure in 2022 as India’s most successful Test captain with an astonishing 40 wins in 68 matches. With 11 draws and 17 defeats, Kohli boasted a win percentage of 58.82. Under Kohli, Team India rose to the top of the ICC Test rankings and held the position for a record 42 months.

He stepped down as Test captain less than 24 hours after India lost the series in South Africa in January 2022.
