New Delhi: Former Italy and AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has been removed from his position of AS Roma head coach after he oversaw the club’s poor start to the campaign. The Italian manager became the first high-profile European sacking of the season after failing to win any of the club’s first four games of the season. Three draws and a loss in the first four games see the club sit just a point above relegation zone in 16th place.
De Rossi was only appointed as head coach in January of this year after the club sacked Jose Mourinho. He was initially signed on an interim basis and managed to steady the club’s season well. He guided the club to a respectable sixth placed finish and also took the team to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season which earned him a permanent role at the club in the summer.

He signed a new three-year deal at the club in June 2024, which would see him remain at the club till 2027 but was sacked just over a month into the new season. Roma are a club with a proud heritage and history in Italy and seeing them languishing near the drop zone is definitely not a welcome sight for the owners. The club statement also read “The decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.”
The club thanked their former midfielder for the work he did during his tenure as head coach and for the commitment and passion he showed during his stay. They even mentioned that the Italian will always be at home at the Giallorossi Club after the 41-year-old spent nearly his entire playing career with the club, spending only one season of his professional career with a team that is not called Roma.
De Rossi had a distinguished playing career with the Giallorossi as he spent 18 years with the club between 2001 and 2019. A tough tackling defensive midfielder, he made 616 appearances for the capital club and contributed to 124 goals, scoring 63 and assisting 61. He helped the club win back-to-back Coppa Italias in 2007 and 2008. He oversaw a summer overhaul of the club with numerous transfers but that failed to translate into results on the pitch.
The former AS Roma captain has been relieved of his duties as the club’s manager with immediate effect according to the club’s official statement. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
