New Delhi: Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal witnessed a career-threatening encounter in the Indian Premier League 2023 season which shook him extremely. The promising paceman was smashed for as many as five consecutive sixes by batter Rinku Singh, as he failed to defend 29 runs in the final over representing Gujarat Titans (GT). Such was the consequence of the brutal thrashing that it even impacted him mentally. But destiny had better plans for Dayal.
In the 2024 edition of the IPL, the fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru get a spot in the playoffs by defending 17 runs in the last over against Chennai Super Kings. Apart from this, his skillset in both the white-ball and red-ball formats impressed the Indian team selectors to a large extent that he ended up getting a call for the upcoming Bangladesh Test series as well. But the horrifying memory of the 2023 IPL tragedy does not leave him.
Rinku thrashing affected family as well
In an interaction with ESPN Cricinfo, the paceman recalled how the thrashing from Rinku Singh in last year’s IPL not only affected him but his family members as well. The young fast bowler said that they suffered anxiety and even stopped eating on some occasions.
“My family had to bear the brunt. My mother couldn’t believe such things could happen to her son. During that phase, my family suffered acute anxiety, and at times they stopped eating. I kept telling them that as a cricketer there will be off days and good days. I will perform sometimes and sometimes I won’t. They shouldn’t be scared about what happened or what will happen,” Dayal told Cricinfo.
“I was told by my friends and Gujarat Titans coaches not to go onto social media after that game, but I did and I was highly impacted by what was being said about me. But as they say, a good support structure comes in handy at such times. My family supported me. I supported them. I would also like to give credit to my state team Uttar Pradesh, who never made me feel like I was not fit to be part of the playing XI,” he added.
For the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league, the quality pacer was roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
