ICC to penalise Bangladesh for poor over-rate on Day 1 of first Test vs India?

New Delhi: Bangladesh started off on a positive note on the first day of the first Test match against India but found them in a spot of bother at stumps. The visitors did an amazing job by reducing the hosts to 144 for 6 but Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then joined hands for the 7th wicket pulling off a remarkable rescue act which pushed the Bangla Tigers on the backfoot.

India ended the day at 339 for 6 with Ashwin and Jadeja both steady on the crease. This saw Bangladesh loose the grip on the game but a bigger issue might bother them soon. The visitors, even after getting half an hour extra, managed to complete just 80 overs in the day, 10 short of the minimum target. This might put the Bangladesh side in trouble as the International Cricket Council (ICC) might punish them for slow over-rate.

Trouble mounts for Bangladesh

If the visiting side is penalised by the ICC for slow over-rate, that might put them in further trouble as Bangladesh were docked three World Test Championship points along with a fine of 15 percent of the match fee last month only. They were penalised after being found three overs short during their first Test match against Pakistan and if it happens again, it will further hamper them.

As per article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions- “A team will have one (1) World Test Championship competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage.”

Meanwhile, many former cricketers and commentators criticised the side heavily for falling short of the minimum target even after getting extra time. India will try their level best to further build-up on today’s hard work and put up a commanding total in front of the Bangla Tigers.

Despite getting extra half an hour, Bangladesh bowled only 80 overs against India on Day 1 of the first Test match in Chennai on Thursday.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
