New Delhi: Bangladesh were quick to recover on the second day after being toiled for the later half of the opening day in the first Test against India in Chennai. Pace bowler Taskin Ahmed provided the much-needed breakthrough with Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s removal.
Continuing from his overnight score of 86, Jadeja wasn’t able to add any runs on the second day after nicking an away-angling delivery from Taskin which was pitched just short of the good length. It was a comfortable grab for Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das behind the wickets. Jadeja walked back to the Indian dressing room with the score of 86 runs from 124 balls, smashing 10 fours and two sixes.
The dismissal not just ended hopes for Jadeja to complete his fifth Test ton but also broke the 199-run resolute stand with Ravichandran Ashwin for the seventh wicket. Ashwin and Jadeja resurrected India’s innings on Day 1 after the hosts were tattering for 144 for 6 in the second session.
How Ashwin and Jadeja bailed out India from precarious position on Day 1?
It was Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud’s fiery spell in the first session that blew off India’s top order barring Yashasvi Jaiswal. Mahmud removed the big names of Indian cricket with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli walking back to the pavilion with a bit of embarrassment.
Although Jadeja walked out earlier to bat, local lad Ashwin was solid with the willow, defying all the hard lines of Mahmud and Co. to complete his sixth Test century. Ashwin and Jadeja hit 20 fours and four sixes in their unbeaten 195-run stand at the end of Stumps on Day 1.
A slog-sweep against fellow off-spinner Shakib Al Hasan for a six was the highlight of Ashwin’s determined knock. Jadeja was soon to follow the suit as he charged against the veteran Bangladesh cricketer with a six and two boundaries. The southpaw’s brilliant cover drive off pacer Nahid Rana brought up the 150-run stand between the two spin-bowling all-rounders. However, they fell one run short from becoming the fifth Indian pair to register 200-plus partnership against Bangladesh in Tests.
