New Delhi: Bhagat Singh was one of the greatest freedom fighters in the history of the Indian Independence Movement. The revolutionary died when he was just 23 years old, but he left behind a legacy which has stood the test of time. Singh has been lionised in popular art and literature and is sometimes referred to as the Shaheed-e-Azam. In this article, we will take a look at why Bhagat Singh and his associates killed John Saunders.
Why did Bhagat Singh kill John Saunders?
In 1928, the British government formed the Simon Commission to gather information and analyse the Indian political scenario at that time. The Commission was boycotted by some Indian political parties since it had no Indian.
On October 30, 1928, the Commission visited Lahore and the famous freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai led a protest march against it. Police tried to disperse the large crowd and soon chaos and violence broke out. James A. Scott, who was the police superintendent, ordered the police to lathi-charge the protesters. Scott himself assaulted Rai and the latter sustained grave injuries. Rai passed away on November 17, 1928, mainly due to the injuries. However, as was expected, the British Government denied any role in Rai’s death.
At that time, Bhagat Singh was a prominent member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) which later became the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). The organisation vowed to avenge the death of Rai and Singh conspired with revolutionaries like Sukhdev Thapar, Shivaram Rajguru and Chandrashekhar Azad to kill Scott. However, they mistakenly shot John P. Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, on December 17, 1928, as he was leaving the District Police Headquarters in Lahore.
