New Delhi: A day after seven state association tennis bodies proposed to move a no-confidence motion against All India Tennis Association (AITA) president Anil Jain, reports suggest that the move has been withdrawn on the day of the national federation’s election.
The state associations of Assam, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Tripura, who are all affiliated with the AITA, decided to hold an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Saturday, the very same day when the federation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was scheduled.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Anil Jain moved the court asking for a stay on the EGM but the plea wasn’t entertained. The current AITA president alleged that a few candidates, who filed nomination for various posts, had breached the Sports Code.
“The no-confidence motion has been withdrawn, so EGM was not required,” a source told PTI without sharing the details.
Jain, who is a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, faced charges of “loading the association with his personal ‘entitled’ expenses by travelling with his family abroad several times.”
What’s the accusation against Anil Jain by state associations?
One of the member of the eight state associations had accused Jain of using his position in AITA for personal gains.
“Setting aside all the principles of good governance, he has used the AITA Trust for his personal hidden agenda by becoming a permanent trustee in his individual capacity instead of being in ex-officio capacity,” a state association wrote to AITA on September 21.
“All the members of AITA, have so far remained silent with a view to maintain dignity and cohesiveness within the fraternity of AITA.”
The current allegations against Anil Jain came after former Indian tennis players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja filed a petition in Delhi High Court this week, asking for a stay on the AITA elections, citing the violations of the National Sports Code, 2011.
The Delhi HC refused to grant stay on the elections, but asked the results not to be publicised and submitted to the respected court in a sealed envelope.
