New Delhi: Some terrific bowling and a sensational T20-style batting effort in their first innings have put India on the cusp of a historic and unlikely win in the second Test against Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. After only 35 overs of action on the first three days of the rain-hit Test match, India did everything they could on Day 4 to ensure they could force a result in the game.
On a sunny day in Kanpur after two days of complete washout, India dominated the proceedings on Monday. The hosts did well to bowl out Bangladesh for 233 runs in their first innings before Rohit Sharma & Co. made a mockery of the visitors’ bowling attack during their first innings. India went hammers and tongs as they switched to T20 mode in Tests.
Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit started the onslaught by helping the hosts race to their first team 50 in just three overs to set a new record in Test cricket. After Rohit’s departure, Jaiswal continued his swashbuckling approach on the other end and ended up hammering 72 of just 51 balls. He was well supported by Shubman Gill, who scored 39 off 36 balls.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then combined to continue the tempo and helped India comfortably overhaul Bangladesh’s first innings total of 233 runs. Kohli scored 47 off 35 balls while Rahul hammered 68 off 43 balls as India posted 285/9 before declaring their innings with a healthy lead of 55 runs. The hosts managed to reduce Bangladesh to 26/2 in their second innings at stumps on Day 4 and will be hoping to bundle out the visitors as quicky as possible on Tuesday to pull off an unlikely victory.
