New Delhi: It was not the ideal start for Harmanpreet Kaur-led India as they slumped to a dismal defeat against New Zealand in their opener in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday. India will aim to bounce back when lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in a marquee clash on Sunday. The stakes will be high for both teams as they will look to get the better of each other in the high-octane encounter.
India, who are one of the favourites to lift the title, were a no-match against the Kiwis as they succumbed to a crushing defeat by 58 runs in their opening game. India suffered a terrible batting collapse during their 161-run chase and were skittled out for a paltry 102 runs as the likes of Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Varma and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur all failed to step up.
The defeat has intensified pressure on the Women in Blue, who will be hoping to keep the dejection aside and bounce back to winning ways against Pakistan. Pakistan are not among the strongest teams in Group A which consists of defending champions Australia, India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. However, they are riding high on confidence after beating Sri Lanka in their opener.
Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 31 runs in Sharjah to get their campaign off to a winning start and will be looking to continue their winning run against India. Though India are clear favourites having dominated their arch-rivals in the past, Harmanpreet & Co. will not make the mistake of taking their opponents lightly ahead of the marquee clash.
India women vs Pakistan women head-to-head
India have dominated Pakistan over the years in T20Is having won 12 out of 15 matches between the two teams in the shortest format. Pakistan have managed only three wins against India in T20Is. The two teams last met in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 earlier this year where India registered a comprehensive 7-wicket victory after a stellar bowling performance.
India will look to continue their dominant run against Pakistan and improve their brilliant head-to-head record against the Fatima Sana-led side with a victory at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. While India will be searching for their first win of the tournament, Pakistan will be aiming to make it two wins in a row.
