New Delhi: England beat Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test at Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan on Friday, October 11. The hosts only managed to score 220 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the second innings with spinner Abrar Ahmed not able to bat on Day 5 due to high fever.
After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first and posted 556 runs in the first innings. Gus Atkinson dismissed Saim Ayub for 4 runs but Shafique and Masood built a 253-run partnership for the second wicket. Captain Masood notched up 151 runs off 177 balls while Shafique scored 102 runs off 184 balls. Agha Salman also amassed 104 runs.
In reply, the visitors declared their first innings on 823 runs. Joe Root scored 262 runs off 375 balls and surpassed Alastair Cook to become England’s leading run-scorer in Tests. Harry Brook also scored 317 runs off 322 balls. Both batters stitched a record-breaking 454-run partnership.
In the second innings, Pakistan got off to a bad start and lost 6 wickets on just 82 runs. Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal stitched a 109-run partnership but Jack Leach removed Pakistan’s lower order on day 5 to register a massive win in Multan.
