The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mysore Palace is the breathtaking backdrop for the grand Dasara (Dussehra) celebrations in Mysuru, Karnataka. Steeped in royal grandeur and cultural heritage, this annual event brings the city to life with ten days of vibrant festivities, culminating in the famed Jamboo Savari procession on ‘Vijayadashami’.

The Mysore Palace, decked in millions of lights, offers a captivating sight, showcasing Karnataka’s royal history and rich traditions. The cultural programs held in front of the palace feature classical dance, music, and folk art, giving visitors a taste of the state’s artistic diversity.

Mysuru Dasara 2024: Celebrating Karnataka’s rich heritage

Known as ‘Nada Habba’, or the state festival of Karnataka, Mysuru Dasara is a grand celebration of the region’s culture, traditions, and history. The festival features a wide range of events, including women’s and youth-oriented activities, food fairs, flower shows, and poetry recitals. The city becomes a hub of festivities, with every corner of Mysuru illuminated in celebration, creating a magical atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the arrival of the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, which is brought from Chamundi Hills to Mysore Palace. Adorned in a specially woven royal blue Mysore silk saree, the idol is paraded in the Jamboo Savari procession on the day of Vijayadashami. The 750-kg golden howdah, carried by the revered elephant Abhimanyu, is the centerpiece of this procession. The Chief Minister of Karnataka offers floral tributes to the Goddess, continuing a tradition rooted in royal heritage.

Culminating in the majestic torchlight parade, the Dasara festivities bring together people from across the state and beyond to witness a celebration like no other, cementing Mysuru’s status as a cultural hub during this auspicious time of year.
