Yashasvi Jaiswal on cusp of history, 283 runs away from achieving massive feat in WTC

New Delhi: Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be eyeing history in the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand at home. Jaiswal has been in phenomenal form for India in Tests this year and has been amassing runs at an incredible consistency. Jaiswal will look to become the first Indian batter to score 1500 runs in a World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

India will take on New Zealand in the 1st Test of the three-match series in Bengaluru starting October 16. The hosts will look to continue their winning run having clean swept Bangladesh 2-0 in their last assignment. A 3-0 series win against New Zealand will all but confirm India’s spot in their third straight World Test Championship final.

Jaiswal will be one of the key players for India in the series and will be looking to continue his purple patch having dominated in the longest format in 2024 so far. Jaiswal has already amassed 929 runs in just 8 matches this year at an excellent average of 66.35, including six fifties and two hundreds. He is currently the leading run-getter for India in Tests this year.

1st Indian batter to complete 1500 runs in a WTC cycle

Jaiswal, who finished as the leading run-getter for India in the home Test series against England earlier this year and the recently concluded Test series against Bangladesh, needs only 289 runs to become the first Indian to complete 1500 runs in a WTC cycle. He has so far notched up 1217 runs in the ongoing WTC 2023-25 and is on the cusp of achieving the huge feat.

Jaiswal has already broken Ajinkya Rahane’s record for the most runs for India in a single World Test Championship campaign. Rahane amassed 1159 runs for India in the 2019-21 cycle. With 1915 runs from 22 matches in the WTC 2021-23 cycle, Root holds the record for most runs by any batter in a single edition of the tournament.

Most runs for India in World Test Championship cycle:

Yashasvi Jaiswal (2023-25) – 1217 runs

Ajinkya Rahane (2019-21) – 1159 runs

Rohit Sharma (2019-21) – 1094 runs

India are currently on the top of the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table with a win percentage of 74.24 after 8 wins, 2 draws and a solitary loss from 11 matches in the ongoing cycle. India need to win all three Test matches against New Zealand in the upcoming series to be all but assured of a spot in the final before heading to Australia for the blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of becoming the first Indian batter to achieve a massive feat in the World Test Championship (WTC). Jaiswal needs 283 runs to achieve the milestone in the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
