New Delhi: Samson Dauda made Bodybuilding history by becoming the first Nigerian-British bodybuilder to become the Mr. Olympia 2024 on October 12, Saturday. Dauda stood in the main center and became the 19th man to win the biggest bodybuilding title. It was a 15-man competition at Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas.
Dauda is also the third non-American bodybuilder to win the title since 2019. Dauda also earned the biggest purse in the history of bodybuilding competitions. The Olympia owner Jake Wood announced the prize on the stage by awarding $6,00,000 to Mr. Olympia 2024. The previous biggest amount received by any bodybuilder was $4,00,000 for a single contest. There was a huge rise in the purse by the Olympia committee as they raised the prize money.
Before this announcement, The Arnold Classic 2025 made the benchmark with a $5,00,000 winning prize before the Wood’s announcement. It was one of the most unpredictable victories by any athlete in sporting history in recent years. This win is emotional for Dauda as several callouts have been made by officials before announcing his name as the winner.
Before this magnificent win from Dauda, his previous best was finishing in third position twice in 2019 and 2021. He finished fourth in 2020. Hadi Choopan finished in the second position for the second consecutive year. He received $2,50,000 prize money for finishing second in the Mr. Olympia 2024.
Derek Lunsford, the defending champion failed to defend his Mr. Olympia title successfully. He finished third in this edition. It was the third consecutive time that the defending champion failed to defend his Mr. Olympia title. The fan favorite Martin Fitzwater finished in fourth place and gave a glimpse that he will be a force in the sport in the coming Mr. Olympia editions.
