New Delhi: Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has said that India may have lost the grip on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 after their embarrassing loss against Australia in the MCG Test. Shastri said that the terrible shot selection on the fifth and final day by Indian batters cost them the game as well as the BGT.
However, the India veteran refused to divulge the names of the cricketers saying that two senior players and one youngster would possibly face intense heat as far as scrutiny is concerned. Indian team, especially the batters, have been facing a lot of criticism for their poor shot selection and poor batting tactics in the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia. The series is currently poised at 2-1, with just a game to take place in Sydney.
Shastri blasts Indian batters
The former Indian coach, in his column for The Daily Telegraph, wrote that it was mazing to witness the Indian crowds gathered in large numbers at the stadium as they travelled from all parts of the world to experience Test cricket at its best. Further commenting on the poor shot selection, he wrote that the terrible shots on either side of the middle session on the last day cost the visitors the game and probably loosened their entire grip on the BGT, with just the last Test to go.
Veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant failed to stand tall when their team needed them at the crucial juncture. Australia emerged victorious in the match by 184 runs to secure a 2-1 lead in the series. So as to retain the BGT, India must win the final Test match in Sydney while a loss or draw will see Australia reclaim the title after a decade.
‘There will be a few of other second-innings dismissals that will be scrutinised in India as well, involving two senior players and a youngster. Three very loose shots,’ Shastri noted.
