Messi’s recent exploits in national colours

Before this game, Messi hadn’t scored a hat-trick for Argentina since March of 2023, and it had been a while since Argentina’s star dominated the pitch for his national side in this manner. The hat-trick was his 10th in international football, which is the joint highest along with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner had missed the two rounds of the competition in September after sustaining an injury to his right ankle. However, in this game, he played the entire 90 minutes and scored his 112th international goal. Messi noted that being around young teammates, does bring back the youthfulness in him. He concluded that as long as he can contribute to the team’s success, he will continue in the national colours.
