Premier League 2024/25: John Stones’ late goal puts Manchester City back on the top

New Delhi: Manchester City won a close contest against Wolverhampton Wolves as they sealed their luck at the Molineux Stadium in the game’s dying minutes. John Stones kept his nerves as he received a brilliant corner from Phil Foden on the right seven minutes into the stoppage time. Stones timed his jump and powered a header, though close to Jose Sa.

He had timed it enough to get past the shot-stopper and take home their sixth win of the season. They are the only team this season who are undefeated after matchday eight. A VAR referral confirmed that Bernardo Silva, though, was on the offside, wasn’t impeding Sa’s view as Man City fans erupted in joy.

The first half ended with both teams on the balance. Wolves opened their tally early with a seven-minute goal from Jorgen Strand Larsen, who scored from the back post after receiving a cross from Nélson Cabral Semedo. The visitors were initially struggling to break the Wolves defence, having suffered yet another early setback. Rather than trying to make intricate moves, Josko Gvardiol decided to finish from outside the box, curling into the goalpost.

The reigning champions looked clueless for most of the first half as stubborn Wolves were almost impenetrable in the game. City have claimed the vital three points as they lead the table for now, though Pep Guardiola will have to reflect on the performance a little. Though the loss means Wolves are now at the bottom of the table, they put the defending champions in a spot of bother early.

Manchester City return to Premier League

City looked more charged from the second half and were on the offensive side more for the Wolves, who are still searching for their first win this season. Wolves goalkeeper Sa, in particular, was very impressive as he denied the visitors from taking the lead after a series of attacks on the Wolves’ defence and even denied an early equaliser.

City’s win also means they are now record 31 games undefeated in the competition. Though City didn’t look like the strong side that had gone into the International break, their second-half possession shows why they have been so successful in the Premier League in recent seasons. Despite having a rather weak defence, their midfield lacking the experience of Kevin de Bruyne and one of the finest midfielders of the generation, Rodri. Still, City have been able to make progress despite the hindrance.

For Wolves, they will now face Brighton and Hove Albion, against whom they will try their best to score their first win of the season. On the other hand, City will face Sparta Praha in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday at home before returning to the Premier League against Southampton, another home fixture in Etihad Stadium.

John Stones scores a late goal as Manchester City take 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers taking home all three points.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
