New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a six-hour-long meeting with Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir after a humiliating 3-0 loss against New Zealand in the home Test series.
Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and President Stuart Binny also joined the online meeting. Tom Latham and Co. delivered a dominating performance against India in all three departments. They beat Rohit and Co. by 8 wickets in the first Test in Bengaluru while the Indian batters failed to chase the target in the last two Test matches in Pune and Mumbai.
It has been learnt that the questions were asked from Rohit and Gambhir about the certain decisions they took during the series. Gambhir’s coaching style has also been discussed in the meeting.
“It was a six-hour marathon meeting, which was obviously on cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia, and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going about it” a senior BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
It was also learnt that BCCI members weren’t happy that the team’s vice-captain Bumrah was rested for the third and last Test in Mumbai and why the team opted for a rank turner after losing the second Test on a similar kind of pitch in Pune.
“Bumrah’s absence was discussed, although it was a precautionary move. Opting for a rank turner despite India not faring well on these tracks are some of the issues that came up for discussion” the source informed.
India need to win four matches to qualify for WTC final
After losing the home Test series against New Zealand, Rohit and Co. now need to win four Test matches to book a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The Men in Blue will take on Australia in the five-match Test series, starting on November 22 in Perth. Team India will be leaving for Australia in two batches on November 10 and 11.
