New Delhi: Veteran Indian football team goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu committed an epic blunder to let Malaysia take the lead in their international friendly match against India at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday. Gurpreet had a brain-fade moment as he made a massive error in judgement to concede a goal which saw Malaysia break the deadlock to go 1-0 up in the game.
Despite being India’s no.1 goalkeeper for nearly a decade now, Gurpreet has been facing the heat for quite some time now over his regular mistakes between the sticks and his howlers at the highest level. The 32-year-old was once again preferred over Mohun Bagan keeper Vishal Kaith for the friendly against Malaysia on Sunday by head coach Manolo Marquez but failed to repay his faith.
Gurpreet made a costly error in the 19th minute of the game when he was out of his box trying to stop a long pass from the right channel. However, the senior India goalkeeper made a complete misjudgment and failed to connect his header as the ball sailed over his head. Malaysian forward Paulo Josue capitalised on the Indian keeper’s error as he pounced on the ball inside the box and slotted it into the net to put his team ahead.
After failing to stop the ball from his misjudged error, Sandhu desperately tried to catch up and stop Josue from launching his shot but the Malaysian forward had all the time in the world to launch the ball into the back of the net. Gurpreet’s horrible error triggered intense criticism for the Indian goalkeeper on social media as fans slammed him left and right and centre for his howler.
