Abdulla Aboobacker: Kerala athlete rules the trends ahead of men’s triple jump event

New Delhi: All eyes will be on Abdulla Aboobacker who will participate in the triple jump event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He will open his campaign on Wednesday (August 7). Ahead of his jump, the Kerala athlete is ruling the trends on social media.

Born on 17 January 1996 in Nadapuram, Kerala, Aboobacker rose to fame following his heroics at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he claimed a silver medal after a remarkable jump of 17.02 meters (55.8 feet).

India have high hopes from the tall athlete at the Paris 2024 Games.

Early days

Abdulla left his home in Kozhikode, Kerala, at the age of 14 to pursue training in sprinting at Kalladi Higher Secondary School in Palakkad. Aboobacker was initially interested in volleyball and football and later explored various athletic disciplines, including sprints, long jump, high jump, shot put, and hurdles.

He eventually zeroed in on the triple jump, a decision born out of a lack of competition in that discipline. Despite facing several challenges, including an ankle injury in 2015 that ruled him out for over a year, he never let the hurdles affect his journey.

Abdulla won the Asian School Championships title in 2013 before claiming the National Junior title in 2015. After an injury-plagued four-year period, he was recruited by the Indian Air Force in 2018. The move provided him with financial stability and a new coach. He later began training at the Sports Authority of India in Bengaluru to sharpen his skills in triple jump.

Achievements

Among his achievements, the biggest one perhaps is winning a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a jump of 17.02 meters. In a field of top jumpers, he managed to secure 10th place at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon with a jump of 16.45 meters. He then won a gold at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

In 2024, he finished in eighth place at the Xiamen Diamond League in China, sealing the quota in men’s triple jump at the Paris Olympics.
