New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma smashed the highest individual score for India in T20Is, with an explosive 135 off 54 balls against England in the fifth and final match in Mumbai on Sunday.
Sharma completed his fifty in 17 balls and century in 37 deliveries, both second highest for India in T20Is. When he was caught by Jofra Archer off Adil Rashid in the last ball of the 18th over, Sharma had overtaken Shubman Gill to post the highest score by an Indian in T20Is.
Gill had scored an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in 2023. The 24-year-old struck seven boundaries and 13 sixes during his innings. It is the most mumber of sixes hit by an Indian in T20Is.
The left handed Sharma took 37 balls to reach his hundred, placing him second behind Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball mark against Sri Lanka, while his 17 ball half century was second after Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball knock against England in 2007.
India’s highest powerplay score
Sharma’s knock lifted India to 95/1 in the first six overs, their highest powerplay score in the 20-over format, improving on the 82/2 they scored against Scotland in Dubai in 2021.
India made 247/9 after being invited to bat at the Wankhede Stadium, with Shivam Dube’s 13-ball 30 being the second highest score for India in the match.
India have already won the series 3-1 after winning the fourth game in Pune, making Sunday’s clash a dead rubber.
