New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma smashed a dashing hundred in just 28 balls and became the joint-fastest centurion for India in T20 cricket. The 24-year-old Indian opener made 106 runs in just 29 balls against Meghalaya in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium C, Rajkot on December 5, Thursday.
Sharma smacked 11 monstrous sixes and reached his century in just 28 balls. He batted at an astonishing strike rate of 365.52. It was the fourth SMAT century for Indian T20I opener in his domestic career as he also became the first batter to make four centuries in a domestic T20 tournament.
Gujarat’s opener Urvil Patel scored a century in just 28 balls against Tripura last week. Now, both Urvil and Abhishek hold the record for fastest century for India in T20s and are in second position in the list of fastest hundred in T20s around the globe.
Meghalaya won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 142 runs in 20 overs. Punjab’s skipper Abhishek took two wickets in the first innings. Ramandeep Singh also took two wickets in the match.
In response, Punjab’s opener Harnoor Singh departed early but Abhishek was explosive throughout the innings and helped his team chase down 142 runs in just 9.4 overs. It was also the last league match for Punjab, they finished the group stage in fourth position.

Abhishek surpasses Suryakumar Yadav’s most sixes record
Abhishek also broke Indian T20 ace batter Suryakumar Yadav’s record for most sixes in T20 in a calendar year by Indian batters. SKY smashed 85 sixes in 41 innings in 2022 and Sharma surpassed his T20I skipper by smashing 86 sixes in just 38 innings this year. SKY also hit 71 sixes in just 33 innings in 2023 but Abhishek surpassed both records of SKY in T20s.
