New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences after eleven people died and several others were injured in a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, June 04. The stampede occurred outside the stadium as thousands gathered for the home team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s celebrations following their maiden IPL title triumph.
The RCB squad was set to be hosted at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where a felicitation ceremony had been organised for the IPL champions by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). However, the celebrations turned tragic as chaos unfolded outside the stadium, resulting in a stampede when hundreds of fans tried to enter the stadium forcefully.
Fans required passes to enter the stadium, which was packed even before the arrival of the RCB squad. However, thousands of fans had gathered outside the venue to catch a glimpse of the players and celebrate RCB’s maiden title victory. As per reports, the stampede occurred after a drain near the stadium collapsed due to the weight of the people standing on it, resulting in panic.
PM Modi took to X to express his condolences for those who lost their lives in the tragic incident. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured. As per the Karantaka government, 11 people lost their lives and 33 were injured in the stampede.
“The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,” read a tweet from PMO India’s official X handle.

The tragic stampede showcased the poor planning of the Karnataka government, RCB officials and the KSCA in organising the event to celebrate the team’s victory. The organisers were not expecting lakhs of people to turn up for the celebrations and not enough security arrangements were in place to manage the crowd to avoid the tragic incident.
BCCI has no role in RCB event: Devajit Saikia
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that the Indian cricket board had no role in the event, which organised by the KSCA and RCB. However, Saikia emphasised that there was a lapse on the franchise’s part and that the board will look into formulating regulations for such events in the future to avoid tragic incidents like the one that took place on Wednesday.
“It’s very unfortunate what has happened,” Saikia told PTI.
“I think there were some lapses. The BCCI has no role in it. But it’s a lesson to learn. We will look into forming new rules for such victory celebrations going forward,” he added.
