New Delhi: Do you also experience acidity regularly? This can be a serious issue as you may think, however, Acidity is a common problem that affects most adults. There has been a significant jump in Gastroenteritis cases among adults and some of the major reasons behind the rise are poor lifestyle habits, poor diet, and binge eating on outside food. This can be quite uncomfortable and may not be manageable via lifestyle changes and adjustments, this may demand a medical intervention.
While speaking to News9, Dr Ramraj V N, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi said, “Acidity, a burning sensation in the chest or upper abdomen, is a common complaint among adults. Often experienced as heartburn, it can be a sporadic discomfort or a chronic condition. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and management strategies can significantly improve the quality of life.”
Understanding Acidity
According to Dr Ramraj, “Acidity occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube connecting the mouth and stomach. This backflow, often due to a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES), irritates the esophageal lining. While occasional acidity is manageable, frequent episodes might indicate a more serious condition called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).”
Common Symptoms of Acidity
Apart from the classic heartburn, acidity can manifest in various ways. A sour taste in the mouth, frequent burping, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and chronic cough are some common symptoms. In severe cases, it can lead to sleep disturbances, hoarseness, or dental problems.
Factors leading to acidity
Several lifestyle factors contribute to acidity
Overeating, consuming spicy or fatty foods, drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking, being overweight
Wearing tight-fitting clothes can exacerbate the condition
Stress and certain medications can also trigger acid reflux
Ways to manage the acidity
Making dietary and lifestyle modifications is often the first line of defence against acidity. Avoiding triggers, eating smaller, frequent meals, maintaining a healthy weight, and elevating the head of the bed during sleep can help. Regular exercise and stress management techniques are also beneficial. When lifestyle changes prove insufficient, medical interventions may be necessary. Over-the-counter antacids provide temporary relief, while prescription medications target acid production or enhance LES function. In serious cases, there is also an option for surgical procedures.
Preventing Acid-Related Complications
Untreated acidity can lead to complications like esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition. Regular check-ups and adhering to treatment plans are crucial for preventing these complications.
