New Delhi: The one-off Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to the consistent rain on Friday, September 8. This was only the eighth Test match which was abandoned in such a manner in the history of longest format. This was also the first time that a Test was abandoned without any play in India. The first two days of the match were called off because of the wet outfield and the remaining three days were then washed out due to persistent rain.
Let’s take a look at the other seven Test matches:-
1. England vs Australia, Old Trafford 1890
The third Test match of England vs Australia in 1890 at Old Trafford was called off without a toss. Test cricket used to be just three days long back then and it rained heavily in Manchester on all three days. Hosts England won the first two Test matches and sealed their eighth Ashes series in a row.
2. England vs Australia, Old Trafford 1938
After 48 years on the same venue, the third Test match between England and Australia was abandoned due to the continuous rain on all four days and the score line of the series remained 0-0 after the first three Tests. Both teams won one Test match each thereafter to level the five-match Test series 1-1.
3. Australia vs England, MCG 1970
England’s cricket team toured Australia for the seven-match Ashes series which was later changed to six matches due to the rain in the third match at the MCG between December 31, 1970 and January 5, 1971.
4. New Zealand vs Pakistan, Dunedin 1989
Pakistan toured New Zealand in 1989 but the first Test match of the series was called off on Day 3 due to the persistent rain in Dunedin. This was the first-ever abandoned Test match that didn’t feature Australia and England.
5. West Indies vs England, Georgetown 1990
England toured West Indies in 1990 for the five-match Test series and won the first Test. But no play was possible in the second Test match in Guyana on the first three days. The officials called off the match and organised an ODI on Day 5.
6. Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, Faisalabad 1998
Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan in the first Test match in Peshawar in 1998 and drew the second match in Lahore. Both teams travelled to Faisalabad for the third and last match of the series but it was called off due to the heavy fog on each first four days.
7. New Zealand vs India, Dunedin 1998
India toured New Zealand for the Test series in late 1998 but the first Test was abandoned due to the heavy rain at the Carisbrook in Dunedin. The three-match Test series was reduced to two-match and hosts New Zealand won by 1-0.
The one-off Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand in Greater Noida became the 8th match in cricket history to be called off without a ball being bowled. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
