New Delhi: After an early retirement at the Australian Open 2025, Grigor Dimitrov has been forced to withdraw from the Rotterdam Open due to his injury. The comeback of Dimitrov, the world number 11, is further delayed due to his groin injury which led to the tennis player pulling out of the first Grand Slam of the season – the Australian Open 2025.
In his maiden tournament of the year, the Bulgarian player made a promising start, storming into the Brisbane International semifinal but soon after that, he sustained a groin injury against Jiri Lehecka forcing him to retire in the second set of their match. Almost one and a half week later, Dimitrov took to the court at the Melbourne Park in full enthusiasm but was forced to take a medical timeout early in the Australian Open first round match.
Dimitrov’s hopes of return crashed
After the retirement at the Australian Open 2025, the former world number three was hoping to bounce back in Rotterdam but failed to get fit in time for the ATP event. This means that Bulgarian tennis player won’t make his 11th appearance at the the tournament this year, where he has had a terrific record. In the past, Dimitrov finished as runner-up to Swiss ace Roger Federer in the 2018 Rotterdam final and he was also a semifinalist on as many as three other occasions.
Meanwhile, in another blow for the tournament organisers, reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner also decided to pull out of the event citing exhaustion after the Grand Slam. He communicated to the organisers that he will not participate as he needs ample time to rest.
‘After consulting with my team we had to take the difficult decision to withdraw from the Rotterdam Open. My body needs time to rest after the long run in Australia,’ the world number one said in a statement.
