New Delhi: As the Bengaluru leg of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 concluded on Saturday, Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals confirmed its spot in the playoffs after outplaying the home favourite Royal Challengers Bengaluru by nine wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This makes the Capitals as the first team to make it through the playoffs in the five-team event.
The defending champions RCB were handed their fourth straight defeat in front of the boisterous home crowd, though they still remain in contention for a playoffs spot. However, the race will get stiffer for all other four teams from this point to secure the remaining two places.
Delhi Capitals have won five out of their seven league matches so far to accumulate 10 points on the charts. This will be the third straight appearance for Lanning & Co. in the WPL playoffs after the team finished as the runners-up in the previous two instances.
Shafali Verma, Jess Jonassen star for Capitals
After electing to bowl first at the toss, the Capitals restricted RCB to a below-par 147 for 5 despite the consistent efforts of star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry (60 off 47 balls) to take the mantle. She was backed with the efforts from youngster Raghvi Bist (33 off 32 balls) in the middle overs. Pacer Shikha Pandey (2 for 24) and left-arm spinner Nallapureddy Charani (2 for 28) led the charge for Delhi with the ball.
Although Capitals lost skipper Meg Lanning for just two runs early in the chase, dynamic opener Shafali Verma and another Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen (61 off 38 balls) notched brisk half-centuries to accomplish the task with 27 balls and nine wickets to spare. Renuka Singh Thakur (1 for 28) picked the lone wicket for RCB in a match that saw them being mauled by the opposition.
Delhi Capitals will play their last league match against Gujarat Giants on March 7 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
