New Delhi: After a successful stint with the Lucknow Super Giants franchise in the Indian Premier League, Mitchell Marsh is set to lead Australia in the West Indies T20I series. Australia’s T20 squad for the five-match series was announced on Wednesday with explosive batter Mitchell Owen earning a maiden call-up.
Marsh had a memorable season with LSG where he scored more than 600 runs including a century. Pacer Josh Hazlewood, who was rested for Australia’s last T20 series against Pakistan in November last year is back in the squad while left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has also earned a call-up. Marsh had missed the Pakistan series due to a lower back injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Cummins, Starc, Head left out
Australia’s Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins, lethal batter Travis Head and pace spreadhead Mitchell Starc were left out of the 16-man squad for the series next month. All the three players will return to Australia after the three Tests against the West Indies which begin on June 25.
Young sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk unfortunately didn’t get a chance to be a part of the side paving way for Qwen who had a successful Big Bash League season. The 23-year-old batter was the highest run-scorer and also scored a memorable 108 runs off 42 deliveries in the final. Australia have clinched 12 of their past 14 matches as they build towards next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The first T20 against the West Indies is on July 20 at Kingston, Jamaica.
